February edition of....
month to month photo montages of our explorations in south 'merica
currently KC is "pausing" in Michigan but is returning to Santiago with a stint beforehand in Lima (in March?), while JC has just recently arrived in Lima and is living it up. Thus, these monthly mails will not be typical updates about our traveling tales, but rather photo reflections of a trip that we started in January 2008 that we are still having.
February's Theme: Ecuadorian Birds
The following photo collage shows a juxtaposition of birds that were seen by JC and KC last February. Although we would like to pretend that these birds just happened to come across our paths, the truth is that we saw most of them in a zoo in Vilcabamba, Ecuador. We traveled to Vilcabamba as one of our last destinations in Ecuador, after site seeing in the capital Quito, getting a taste of the Amazon in Tena, and hiking through the beautiful Quillota loop and sleeping next to a volcanic crator.
The yellow birds eating off of a stoop from a nice green house were captured by JC right before entering the zoo. As we entered, we were confronted by Ostriches (albeit in cages), which scared the hell out of Kate (they were twice her height!). Next we observed the strange looking King Vultures (in our collage only one appears), who didn't scare us so much but look very creepy. Lastly we saw Macaw Parrots in a variety of colors playing, eating and attempting to fly with clipped wings.
Chickens are plentiful throughout South America, and although we saw them throughout our travels, this one shown (in its adolescent phase) was seen not in the countryside, but rather in the Amazonian jungle.
The plate with the bird art work was hung in a beautiful building in Cuenca, Ecuador-Thanks JC for taking this picture secretly and not getting us kicked out of the "no photography allowed" exhibit.
Until next month,
